The musicians of the jazz band Blue hit all the right notes

A group of jazz musicians in the Band of Blue at Colleton County High School recently scored a big win in Walterboro, with the school’s Jazz Band receiving an excellent overall rating at the Jazz Performance Appraisal Festival of the South Carolina Directors Association 2022.
The local jazz band traveled to Newberry College for the festival and were part of a group of 40 ensembles that performed. “We are extremely proud of our group members and their hard work. The jazz ensemble has grown so much musically and really rebounded after 18 months away from Covid,” said Band of Blue manager Tom Finigan. “Playing jazz allows our students to be creative and learn to solo and improvise.”
This is the second time Colleton County High School has sent a jazz band to the state festival: Colleton County’s last performance was before COVID, in 2020.
According to Finigan, the Band of Blue’s Jazz Band meets once a week after school and is open to all band members. Among the participants of the jazz band, there are students who are learning a second instrument or a different instrument, he said.
During the recent festival, the musicians of the jazz band from Colleton performed three songs: “Jammin’ with Charlie”, with Dominick Jackson on guitar, “What a Wonderful World” and “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love”.
