NBA COVID tracker: team-by-team roster as Jazz’s Rudy Gobert and Bucks’ Jrue Holiday enter protocols

With the omicron variant rampant, the NBA rosters are evolving. Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert, Milwaukee guard Buck Jrue Holiday and Dallas Mavericks big man Kristaps Porzingis are among the many players in the league’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Since the beginning of December, more than 300 players have entered into protocols, by ESPN.

In related news, as of December 26, more stringent protocols – tighter mask requirements, increased testing – have been in effect. These rules will be in place until the All-Star break in mid-February, and any player who hasn’t received a recall shot will be subject to additional restrictions off the field.

Another change is that some players can now clear health and safety protocols and resume play as early as five days after testing positive, provided they are asymptomatic, vaccinated and likely not contagious (i.e. their cycle threshold is greater than 30).

Players who recently completed protocols include John Collins of the Atlanta Hawks, Julius Randle of the New York Knicks and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Between the amended return-to-play policy and the new rule requiring teams to use hardship exceptions when multiple players are on protocols, the NBA aims to avoid postponing more games.

There have been 11 postponements this season, and the NBA has announced makeup dates this week. Here is a list of games that have been pushed back:

• New Orleans Pelicans vs. Philadelphia 76ers (December 19)
• Denver Nuggets at the Brooklyn Nets (December 19)
• Cleveland Cavaliers v Atlanta Hawks (December 19)
• Chicago Bulls vs. Toronto Raptors (December 16)
• Detroit Pistons vs. Chicago Bulls (December 14)

Five head coaches are in health and safety protocols: Taylor Jenkins (Memphis Grizzlies), Jason Kidd (Dallas Mavericks), Mike Budenholzer (Milwaukee Bucks), Nate McMillan (Atlanta Hawks) and Michael Malone (Denver Nuggets).

Nine other coaches – Doc Rivers (Philadelphia), Chauncey Billups (Portland Trail Blazers), Rick Carlisle (Indiana Pacers), Alvin Gentry (Sacramento Kings), Frank Vogel (Los Angeles Lakers), Billy Donovan (Bulls), Monty Williams ( Phoenix Suns), Tyronn Lue (Los Angeles Clippers) and Mark Daigneault (Oklahoma City Thunder) – came in and subsequently cleared the protocols this season.

The Raptors played two home games in December at 50% capacity and, as of December 31, cannot allow more than 1,000 people into the Scotiabank Arena, per a provincial mandate. The team is waiting limit to be up for the next three weeks, and, as such, play in a practically empty arena.
