Jazz music to fill the weekend

Labor Day weekend is back and with it comes the annual Labor Day Jazz Festival.

Garden City Jazz is once again partnering with local businesses and venues to present a number of activities for jazz music lovers as well as those new to the genre.

“Labor Day Jazz Weekend is our favorite time of year as we collaborate with many partners to present exciting new music events,” said Garden City Jazz founder Karen Gordon.

The events begin on Thursday August 29, without music, but with words. The Local Music Scene Live: Entrepreneurship for Musicians is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. at Humanitree House, 305 Eighth St. This panel discussion will feature artists and promoters sharing how they find their unique voice in the community.

An art gallery crawl is offered from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, August 30, with 10 galleries participating. Check in to Augusta & Co. at 1010 Broad St., then take a self-guided tour of the Community Gallery, Augusta History Museum, Morris Museum of Art, Sacred Heart Cultural Center, Art on Broad, from Tyr City Potters, from Humanitree House, Ann N. Johnson Gallery of Art from the Jessye Norman School of the Arts and Field Botanicals. Participants can check in at each stop via social media.

Saturday jazz offerings start early with Saturday Morning Swing at Augusta Market at the River, 1 Eighth St. Artists Robert Reid and John W. Hobbs will perform. The market is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Later in the evening, the Augusta White Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. at an undisclosed location. Tickets are $60 or $110 for a couple.
