SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Donovan Mitchell had 34 points and six assists to lead the Utah Jazz to the Boston Celtics 137-130 on Friday night.
Mike Conley added 29 points and seven assists for the Jazz. Rudy Gobert had 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Utah set a 3-point record of 27 and shot 53% from long distance. This helped the Jazz survive a 52% Celtics shooting performance.
“It feels good to get this win,” said Gobert. We could have cracked and stopped playing the right way mentally. But we kept moving the ball, we kept attacking, we kept trusting each other. It’s a huge victory for us. ”
Jayson Tatum scored 37 points to lead Boston. Dennis Schroder added 26 points while Al Horford had 21 points and nine assists.
It wasn’t enough to overcome the scorching fire from Utah. The Jazz are the first team to hit 20 or more 3-pointers against the Celtics this season.
“I’ve never been on a team that scores so many 3s like that,” said Horford. And especially type 3 – they weren’t necessarily all open. They were difficult, contested 3s. ”
Robert Williams III scored on three straight possessions to cap a 9-0 run and give Boston a 113-109 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Utah responded by scoring seven straight possessions to take the 127-120 lead with 1:57 remaining. Mitchell took three shots in a row, including a 3-point green light.
Tatum had a layup and two free throws to bring Boston down to under-three in the last minute. Mitchell fell back 3 points with 28.2 seconds left to avoid a comeback.
The Jazz ended the game with nine of their last 11 shots.
“It comes from preparation,” said Mitchell. “I have to give the coach (Quin Snyder) credit for that. “
Conley made three 3-pointers to fuel a 14-2 game opener for the Jazz. That set the stage for a first quarter when Utah scored nine 3-pointers and shot 12 of 18 from the field overall.
Boston reduced the deficit to 30-23 with a steal and dunk from Josh Richardson. Jordan Clarkson responded with back-to-back baskets to bring Utah’s lead back to double digits.
The Jazz took a game-high 43-29 lead in the second quarter on a Gobert dunk. Then the Celtics rallied. Boston pulled off an 11-0 streak punctuated by back-to-back baskets from Tatum and Schroder to reduce Utah’s lead to 43-40.
Horford scored five baskets in the second quarter to prevent the Jazz from pulling away again before half-time. His last shot, a hook shot, brought the Celtics down to 57-56.
After falling behind the entire first half, Boston took their first lead at 73-71 in the third quarter thanks to a reverse layup from Marcus Smart.
Celtics: Jaylen Brown didn’t play (right hamstring squeeze). … Smart had four interceptions, giving him 750 for his career. . Boston totaled 41 points, a season-high, in the third quarter.
Jazz: Royce O’Neale returned to action after missing two games with a sprained right foot. O’Neale finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. … Utah scored a season-high 38 points in the first quarter and a season-high 41 in the third quarter.
Utah allowed 21 points on 12 turnovers in the first half. It gave Boston new life after the Jazz threatened to break the game wide open early in the first quarter.
Things improved in this department as the second half progressed. Utah hasn’t committed any sales in the past 5 and a half minutes.
“Our defense took a step forward and offensively we recognized some situations where they were trying to change people into pick and roll and did a good job of reacting,” Snyder said.
The Celtics have relied heavily on three guard formations with center Horford to give them a little more offensive versatility to counter Gobert’s rim protection. It worked well, offensively. Boston has scored 30 or more points in each of the last three quarters.
“We wanted to force their hand a bit with the way they were guarding,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said. Gobert controlled the painting. I wanted to put him against guys like Al and Grant (Williams) who space the floor a bit better obviously, keeping him away from the edge. ”
The Celtics travel to Portland on Saturday.
Jazz visits Cleveland on Sundays.
