The Australian Grand Prix Corporation has been engaged in a delicate dance with Dorna Sports, the MotoGP rights holder, to secure the event's future. But here's where it gets controversial: Dorna, now owned by Formula 1's Liberty Media, has its eyes on a new direction - street circuits.
A source close to the negotiations revealed that Dorna demanded the race move to Albert Park in Melbourne, a proposal that has sparked resistance from the Victorian government.
"The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is more than just a race; it's a symbol of Phillip Island's identity and a major economic driver," said a Victorian government spokesperson. "We're determined to keep it here."
And this is the part most people miss: motorcycle circuits demand more space for rider safety, a challenge Albert Park may not be able to meet without significant environmental impact.
Circuit owner Andrew Fox echoed these concerns, stating, "A street race for MotoGP at Albert Park? It's a non-starter. The residents are already opposed to Formula 1, and the required track modifications would be a disaster for the environment and a financial burden."
The impasse has led to secret discussions between Dorna and the South Australian government, exploring the possibility of hosting the event in Adelaide. But the Victorian government is not backing down, increasing its financial offer to keep the race at Phillip Island.
"Phillip Island is an icon, and the MotoGP has been a part of its identity for over two decades," said Fox. "It's brought the world to our doorstep, supported our community, and created a unique atmosphere. We can't let that go easily."
