A recent documentary has dropped a bombshell, claiming that priceless artifacts were stolen from the legendary tomb of Tutankhamun. This revelation has sent shockwaves through the archaeological community and beyond.
The documentary presents fresh evidence suggesting that British archaeologist Howard Carter, who discovered the tomb in 1922, may have taken items before the official unsealing. For decades, suspicions lingered, but concrete proof was elusive - until now.
Channel 4's documentary unveiled previously unpublished correspondence, including letters from Sir Alan Gardiner, a philologist on the excavation team. Gardiner's letter to Carter, dated 1934, states unequivocally that a whm amulet, given to him by Carter, was stolen from Tutankhamun's tomb.
But here's where it gets controversial: Carter insisted the amulet did not originate from the tomb. However, an inspection by Rex Engelbach, who catalogued artifacts at Cairo's Egyptian Museum, concluded that the amulet matched other items from the tomb, all cast from the same mold.
Tutankhamun's iconic golden mask and thousands of other artifacts discovered by Carter are now housed in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. But the question remains: did Carter steal anything?
The documentary suggests that Carter's actions may have been influenced by a change in Egyptian law, which occurred just weeks before his discovery. Under the new rules, foreign teams could only keep lesser or duplicate pieces, with historically significant items going to the Egyptian government.
Sally El-Sabbahy, an Egyptian heritage specialist, explained that Carter "had to tread very carefully" to avoid any accusations of theft. She believes the letters represent the first hard evidence of items being removed from the tomb, allegedly by Carter.
However, Carter's great-niece, Susan Allen, vehemently denies the allegations. She told the Daily Mail, "He never stole anything."
This story raises important questions about the ethics and practices of archaeology, especially in an era when the ownership and display of ancient artifacts are hotly debated.
