The Future of Naval Surveillance: Unmanned Vessels Take Center Stage

At the forefront of this technological revolution is the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Researchers at DTU are dedicated to developing advanced surveillance systems for existing unmanned vessels, enabling them to detect anomalies and ensure the safety of Danish waters. These vessels, measuring just two meters in length, are designed to mimic conventional boats while possessing the unique ability to gather comprehensive data.
The data collected by these vessels will be instrumental in creating detailed maps of the seabed and the upper horizon. These maps will serve as a baseline, depicting the 'normal' appearance of the underwater environment. By comparing real-time data collected during patrol operations with these historical maps, the vessels can identify any deviations from the norm.
As DTU Associate Professor and project lead, Roberto Galeazzi, explains, "Once the maps are established, the vessels will patrol and collect data, enabling us to compare it with historical records. If something appears suspicious, the vessel can dispatch an associated unmanned submarine for further investigation. This process will help determine whether the anomaly is merely debris or a potential security threat."
