Filmmaker Vipul Shah is on a mission, and it’s not just about box office numbers. In a bold move that’s sparking nationwide debate, he’s released ‘The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond,’ a sequel that digs deeper into the contentious issue of religious conversion and its far-reaching implications. But here’s where it gets controversial: Shah insists this isn’t a marketing ploy to capitalize on the success of the first film, which raked in over Rs 300 crore and bagged two National Awards. Instead, he claims it’s a response to the overwhelming number of stories he received after the original, revealing a ‘much larger evil’ that transcends Kerala’s borders.
The sequel, which hit theatres last week amidst a storm of criticism, follows three Hindu women from different states who marry Muslim men and are subsequently coerced into converting. Is this a genuine exposé of societal issues, or a provocative narrative designed to polarize audiences? Shah, who co-wrote and produced the film under Sunshine Pictures, is quick to dismiss any notion of a pre-planned franchise. ‘It wasn’t about branding or cashing in,’ he told PTI. ‘The stories we heard were too significant to ignore, and they demanded a new chapter.’
Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, the sequel takes a different creative approach compared to the first film, helmed by Sudipto Sen. But this is the part most people miss: While the original focused on Kerala, the sequel broadens its scope, raising questions about whether it’s addressing a genuine national crisis or amplifying stereotypes. When asked about a potential third installment, Shah remains open but noncommittal, stating it would depend on new, compelling narratives.
The journey to the sequel’s release has been anything but smooth. After the trailer dropped, social media and political circles erupted, labeling the film as hate propaganda. The Kerala High Court initially stayed the release for 15 days, though a division bench later overturned the decision.
