Shirin van Anrooij's Joyous Return to the World Cup Podium
After a challenging two-year absence from the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup podium, Shirin van Anrooij is thrilled to be back. The 23-year-old Dutch cyclist, who has endured a turbulent few years due to a rib injury and subsequent iliac artery endofibrosis surgery, is now gearing up for a strong return to the sport.
Van Anrooij's road to recovery has been a testament to her resilience. She overcame her injury and surgery to excel in road racing, finishing third in the Giro d'Italia Women and fourth in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Now, she's ready to reclaim her place in the cyclo-cross arena.
In the recent World Cup race, Van Anrooij's determination paid off. She secured a well-deserved third-place finish, showcasing her determination and skill. The race was a fierce battle, with Van Anrooij and Aniek Van Alphen trading places, ultimately resulting in Van Alphen taking second and Van Anrooij claiming third.
Despite facing mechanical challenges, including sand and mud around the chain, Van Anrooij's positive attitude prevailed. She expressed her joy, stating, 'I'm super happy to be back. It's really beautiful after two years to be back on the podium of the World Cup.'
Looking ahead, Van Anrooij is eager for more. She plans to train in Spain for two weeks before diving back into the competitive cyclo-cross scene, targeting races in Antwerpen, Koksijde, Dendermonde, Gavere, Diegem, and Zonhoven. Her enthusiasm is infectious, as she anticipates the beauty of the upcoming races, many of which feature sand and mud.
The race conditions were unique, with a section of the course covered in deep surface water due to storms. However, the event proceeded as scheduled, and the winner, Lucinda Brand, described the course as 'aqua biking.' Despite the challenges, Van Anrooij's return to the podium is a testament to her perseverance and a promising sign for her future in cyclo-cross.
