Get ready to take control of your city's future! The City of Sault Ste. Marie is calling on residents to actively participate in shaping its long-term vision. But here's where it gets controversial...
The city is proposing policy updates to its Official Plan, a crucial document that guides land use, infrastructure, housing, and development for years to come.
The Official Plan: A Community's Roadmap
The Official Plan is like a master blueprint, outlining how our city will grow and develop over time. It's a living document that ensures our community's needs are met while preserving our unique character.
Proposed Updates: A Deep Dive
- Rural Estate Residential Subdivisions: A structured evaluation framework will be introduced to ensure these subdivisions are planned thoughtfully, considering the unique needs of rural areas.
- Locally Significant Agricultural Areas (LSAAs): Identifying and protecting these areas is vital. The city aims to minimize agricultural fragmentation by introducing updated consent policies for lot creation.
- Secondary Mineral and Aggregate Resource Areas: Mapping these areas and implementing new consent policies and subdivision restrictions will safeguard access to these essential resources for future generations.
- Urban Settlement Area Expansion: To accommodate growth, the city proposes expanding the boundary of the Urban Settlement Area.
Your Voice, Your City
The city is hosting a public open house on January 21st at the Northern Community Centre. This is your chance to learn about these proposed changes and provide valuable feedback. It's a drop-in event, so feel free to stop by anytime between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. City planning staff will be there to answer your questions and listen to your thoughts.
After the open house, the city plans to bring an application to amend the official plan to the council meeting on February 23rd.
