Paterson Parking Wars: Residents Battle Snow with Chairs and Trash Cans (2026)

In Paterson, a significant snowfall from the recent storm continues to cause complications for both residents and drivers alike, as the cleanup efforts extend into another day. The remnants of the snow have left many vehicles trapped behind towering snowdrifts, with some cars completely plowed in while crews diligently work on clearing the roads. Additionally, side streets in the region remain hazardous, blanketed in ice, and the bitterly cold temperatures have hindered any meaningful melting of the snow.

In a rather resourceful yet controversial move, numerous drivers have resorted to placing chairs and trash cans in parking spots they have cleared themselves, effectively attempting to "claim" their spaces. This practice, however, is against city regulations, much to the dismay of local authorities.

Mayor Andre Sayegh of Paterson addressed the situation directly, stating, "I've witnessed individuals even using pets to hold their parking spots, which I find quite cruel. While using a chair is illegal, we're actively monitoring the situation. Law enforcement has been notified, and we are removing these objects from the streets."

Despite this warning, many residents are unapologetic about their actions. Devin Crespo, a local resident, expressed his frustration, saying, "I understand the mayor's position, but the reality is we need to do what we can. The effort it takes to clear these spots is immense; the snow is hard as rock—it's solid ice!"

Looking ahead, the challenges may not ease anytime soon, as forecasts suggest that another snowstorm could impact the state over the weekend, potentially compounding the existing issues.

But here's where it gets controversial: Should residents be allowed to reserve parking spots in such challenging conditions, or does this only exacerbate the problem? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
