In a surprising turn of events, Ryan Papenhuyzen has candidly shared the reasons behind his departure from the Storm, revealing the pivotal moment that led him to step back from rugby league entirely. After Melbourne faced a heartbreaking defeat in the grand final, it was officially announced that Papenhuyzen would be released from his contract effective immediately. Speculation about his future began to swirl, with many suggesting that the gifted fullback might transition to R360; however, the 27-year-old clarified that he plans to take a break from the sport for a year.
On the 167 podcast, which he co-hosts with former teammates Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster, Papenhuyzen took the opportunity to set the record straight regarding his decision. "I’m not quite sure where to begin, but let’s start with the last game against Brisbane," he stated. "During that match, I suffered a head injury in the closing minutes, which required me to leave the field. Once back in the locker room, I found myself quite emotional... I felt shaken. It's not often that I show my emotions in front of my teammates, but I struggled to keep it hidden that day.
"In that moment, I began to question everything — what am I doing? At what price do I continue to play this sport? It was a fleeting thought, but over the weekend, I really took time to process it. That moment served as the catalyst for the discussions I had in the following weeks. My plan was clear: regardless of the outcome, I intended to take a year off.
"There was always a part of me that thought if we lost, I might want to return to play again, and if we won, it could be the perfect time to walk away. But ultimately, my feelings didn’t change; I’ve poured everything I have into this game. If I continue playing, I need to consider what I'm sacrificing in the process."
In a shocking admission, Papenhuyzen mentioned that he now believes he is effectively retired from rugby league. While he did acknowledge the possibility of exploring rugby union, it was indeed the head injury sustained against the Broncos that radically altered his perspective on his career. Instead of pursuing opportunities within football, he is now focusing on new challenges outside of the sport, despite finding it difficult to leave behind the camaraderie and financial benefits of the game.
As he shifts gears in his life, Papenhuyzen reflected deeply on what he wants to achieve moving forward. "What other goals do I have? Helping others is a priority for me. In what form can I do that? I have a passion for psychology, and I thrive on new experiences, so I’m looking to channel these interests into meaningful pursuits," he explained.
"I know I said I’d take a year off from playing, but honestly, right now, I don’t feel the desire to return. I’m genuinely enjoying what I’m doing currently, and I plan to dedicate myself fully to it. Although discussions about R360 were taking place, that incident against Brisbane felt like a signal from the universe, indicating that I needed to make this decision and commit to it firmly. As it stands, I believe I am retired."
Papenhuyzen’s career with the Storm included 113 games, during which he celebrated a premiership and scored an impressive 77 tries in Melbourne.
