A shocking incident has brought attention to the dangers of drug-impaired driving, highlighting the importance of New Zealand's new roadside drug testing regime. A father, driving under the influence of methamphetamine with his young daughter in the car, became the first person to test positive under this new system.
On Thursday evening, a 40-year-old man was stopped at a police checkpoint on Hutt Rd. Officers utilized a cutting-edge device capable of detecting four impairing substances: THC (cannabis), methamphetamine, MDMA (ecstasy), and cocaine. The test results were alarming - a positive indication of methamphetamine use.
Superintendent Steve Greally, Director of Road Policing, emphasized the significance of these screenings. "The test confirmed our worst fears - methamphetamine." Following this initial positive result, the man was asked to provide further samples for laboratory testing, but he was unable or unwilling to comply.
The consequences were swift. He was issued a summons to appear in court in January, and his license was suspended for 28 days. Both the man and his daughter were safely escorted home by police.
Greally shared his personal experiences, stating, "I've witnessed the unthinkable - the devastation on families' faces when they learn their loved ones are gone due to drug-impaired driving." He continued, "We have a duty to screen drivers for recent drug use, and removing impaired drivers from our roads makes them safer for everyone."
The new roadside drug testing regime, which began in the Wellington region on Monday, will be rolled out nationwide by mid-2026. This initiative aims to tackle the issue of drug-impaired driving head-on, ensuring our roads are safer for all.
