The MacBook Pro has just received a major upgrade with the introduction of the M5 Max and M5 Pro processors, unveiled at Apple's New York event alongside the MacBook Neo and the 2026 MacBook Air. I had the opportunity to get hands-on with the MacBook Pro in both 14- and 16-inch models, and it's a significant improvement under the hood.
Design and Feel: The Timeless Professional Companion
Apple's design philosophy remains consistent, but the internal upgrades are substantial. The sleek aluminum exterior, available in subtle, business-friendly shades, houses a powerful Fusion processor and increased storage capacity. The profile is uniform, a departure from the older wedge-like designs, and the port selection is well-balanced, featuring Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, SDXC card slot, and MagSafe 3 for secure charging.
The keyboard and touchpad, as expected, retain their user-friendly nature, ensuring a familiar experience for long-time MacBook Pro users.
A notable feature is the nano-texture glass option for the display, which effectively reduces glare, making it ideal for outdoor work or environments with direct lighting. This upgrade, while an additional cost, enhances the overall user experience.
Under the Hood: A Performance Leap
The MacBook Pro's exterior remains unchanged, but the interior tells a different story. The base storage capacity has doubled, with the 14-inch M5 and M5 Pro models starting at 1TB and the M5 Max at 2TB, offering a more affordable entry point. SSD speeds have also doubled, reaching an impressive 14.5GBps read/write.
The Wi-Fi hardware has been enhanced with the new Apple N1 radio, enabling Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, bridging the gap with premium Windows laptops in terms of speed and reliability.
The true game-changer lies in the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These processors boast more cores, larger GPUs, and neural acceleration, marking a significant leap in performance. The new MacBook Pro models come with slightly higher base prices, starting at $1,699 for the 14-inch M5 model, $2,199 for the M5 Pro, and $3,599 for the M5 Max. The 16-inch models are priced at $2,699 (M5 Pro) and $3,899 (M5 Max). Preorders are now available, with units shipping on March 11th.
