The Ultimate Winter Test: Lucid's Electric Adventure in the Snow
Imagine braving the bitter cold of Northern Minnesota, where temperatures drop to a bone-chilling -20 degrees Fahrenheit. That's exactly what I did, putting Lucid Motors' vehicles through their paces in a real-world winter wonderland. From the Air Pure to the Sapphire and the Gravity SUV, these electric vehicles (EVs) faced the ultimate challenge.
But here's where it gets controversial... or rather, eye-opening. While most people associate EVs with sleek, eco-friendly rides, few consider their performance in extreme conditions. And this is the part most people miss: Lucid's winter testing reveals a whole new dimension to these cars.
I froze my tail off to bring you this exclusive drive footage, and trust me, it was worth it. From icy rings to traction tests and freestyle snowfields, we put these EVs through their paces. And the results? Well, they might just surprise you.
Lucid's Winter Warriors: Beyond Cold, Beyond Fun
First up, we took each SUV for a spin across various terrain, including those treacherous ice patches. The comparison between the Air Pure, Sapphire, and Gravity was intriguing. While braking performance was similar across the board, the Gravity stood out, especially when using regenerative braking alone.
But the real test came on a ring of pure ice. When I drove the benchmark SUVs, I quickly lost control and spun out. The other SUV locked up, sending me on a diagonal slide. Not ideal. However, the Lucid Gravity offered a unique blend of control and safety. According to my engineer companion, Eric, this was by design. The Gravity ensures you never lose complete control, even on ice, and can recover smoothly.
This part of the testing revealed a lot about Lucid's tuning philosophy. Their team spent months on tracks and in sub-zero conditions, fine-tuning every decision to leverage the unique capabilities of their EV architecture. From a consumer's perspective, I'd feel safer with the Gravity, even on all-season tires, compared to the benchmark SUVs.
RIP Orange Cone: A Snowy Misadventure
Aside from the ice rings, we had a large snowy field to freestyle in. And freestyle we did! One memorable moment involved a sharp turn at 50 mph in the Lucid Air Sapphire, which sent us sliding into an orange cone. At -20 degrees, the cone instantly shattered, leaving a cloud of orange vapor. It was a unique sight, and luckily, the car emerged unscathed.
The Lucid Air Sapphire continues to impress. As I discovered during my first test drive in California, this EV is lightning-fast, almost too fast for the average driver. But its capabilities extend beyond speed. Winter testing revealed its impressive handling and responsiveness, even on ice, thanks to Lucid's advanced EV architecture and traction control system (TCS).
Gravity's Architecture: A Step Ahead
Gravity features Lucid's latest architecture, designed and fine-tuned in-house. This third-generation 1,000-hertz Lucid Traction Control System is a game-changer. It includes brake traction control, described by Lucid as 'state of the art.' Lucid has also co-developed a Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) with Bosch, deeply integrating it into the Gravity. This stability controller is a first for North American companies.
In my winter testing video, you'll see the Lucid Gravity performing 'snownuts' (donuts in the snow). It was an exhilarating experience, and I captured plenty of footage. After some hot laps on my dedicated winter test track, I felt safest with the stability mode fully on. But the partial activation offered a fun, responsive drive, perfect for sliding around in winter conditions.
The control stack in each Lucid model is individually tuned, offering a unique driving experience. Lucid's engineers have crafted a control system that balances torque, slip control, and steering, ensuring a safe and enjoyable drive. I felt more comfortable in the Lucid Gravity compared to the benchmarks, thanks to its immaculately tuned control system.
Final Thoughts: Lucid's Winter Winners
In my opinion, all Lucid EVs passed winter testing with flying colors. The RWD Air, while slower, is still an EV gem. The Sapphire, as always, impressed with its speed and handling. But the Gravity stole the show, offering a sedan-like drive with Volvo-level safety in the snow. Lucid's third-generation TCS is a winter driving hero, giving drivers of all skill levels the confidence to tackle any road.
While most won't be winter testing, Lucid has proven its EVs' capabilities extend far beyond the norm. Their in-house technology is a cut above, and as their vehicles become more affordable, more people will experience this benchmark-setting tech.
Check out my video review for the full winter testing experience, including a hot lap with a Lucid engineer. It's a must-watch for any EV enthusiast!
