Kazakhstan rolls out a groundbreaking irrigation method that reuses drainage water to grow crops more sustainably. The Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Water Economy has created and patented this approach, which was showcased to farmers and reported by Kazinform News Agency (a TV BRICS partner), citing the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
This innovation sits within the institute’s broader research portfolio, which currently includes four water-management projects. The latest findings have appeared in peer-reviewed journals, underscoring the rigor behind this work.
Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, highlighted science’s vital role in driving the sector forward. “Every project our ministry undertakes must be grounded in solid scientific evidence. We place high expectations on the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Water Economy. Now we need tangible results that will help us use water resources more efficiently,” he said.
Other ongoing initiatives from the institute include developing an automated hydraulic gate model suitable for low-discharge irrigation canals; establishing scientific and methodological bases for water supply in the Shu River’s lower reaches; and creating methods to rehabilitate degraded irrigated lands. In Turkestan Region, the institute is testing a pipeless water-lifting technology designed to cut the costs of installing and operating vertical drainage boreholes.
