Dean Vander Mey of Set Free Global reflects, ‘There was nothing there 20 years ago, and now it’s a hub of hope and transformation.’ But how did it begin? It started with a spiritual warfare conference, where 42 orphans, hungry and without means to attend school, found not just food but a future.
Here’s the controversial part: In a world where education is often tied to privilege, these orphans were given a chance simply because someone cared. The local pastor shared their plight with Vander Mey: these children couldn’t afford school supplies, yet they stayed for the conference just to eat porridge. This sparked a bold decision. Vander Mey recalls, ‘We shook hands, and I said, ‘I’ll pay for the shoes, we’ll hire a teacher for $80 a month, and we’ll start a Christian school.’ The pastor offered his church facility, and the rest is history.’
From one teacher and 42 orphans, the ministry has grown to support 11 Christian primary schools educating over 4,500 vulnerable children.
