Geelong's north is currently grappling with the aftermath of an industrial fire that erupted due to exploding gas bottles. The incident has resulted in thick plumes of toxic smoke, prompting an emergency warning for several streets in the area. VicEmergency is urging residents to take immediate action, advising those within the warning area to evacuate and those outside to stay clear.
The cause of the explosions was traced back to a business located on the corner of Thompson Road and Armstrong Street, where multiple gas bottles reportedly exploded. As of 4:30 pm, the emergency warning zone encompassed Pashley Avenue, Sharon Court, and parts of Thompson Road and Armstrong Street, primarily affecting industrial areas.
Aerial footage revealed dense smoke emanating from what appeared to be a pile of tyres and wrecked cars. Firefighting crews were on the scene, actively battling the blaze by hosing it down. The incident was first reported to Triple Zero (000) around 3:30 pm, with callers describing a car fire, explosions, and significant smoke plumes.
Police and paramedics have also been deployed to the scene, ensuring a swift response to the emergency. VicEmergency has issued a caution regarding the smoke's potential impact on the surrounding areas, including North Geelong, Bell Park, Bell Post Hill, and nearby suburbs. They advise that the smoke may exacerbate existing heart and lung conditions and cause irritation to the eyes, coughing, and wheezing.
