Finn Russell's Champions Cup Dream: A Long Road Ahead
Bath's star fly-half, Finn Russell, has issued a bold challenge to his team, urging them to step up their game if they want to achieve his ultimate goal of lifting the Champions Cup. But here's where it gets controversial... Bath, despite their recent domestic success, have yet to make a significant impact on the European stage.
Last season, Bath dominated the Premiership, Prem Rugby Cup, and European Challenge Cup, but their European journey has been less triumphant. In fact, they haven't progressed beyond the last 16 of the Champions Cup in over a decade. And this is the part most people miss: their recent domestic form has been a cause for concern, with a heavy home defeat and a narrow win that left many questioning their consistency.
"We have a long way to go," Russell emphasized. "In this tournament, you're facing the absolute best."
He continued, "To truly compete, we need to be better than we've been this year. We're not satisfied with our performance, and that's a good thing, considering our position in both competitions. But we know we can do so much more."
With just one game left in the pool stage, Bath are currently at the top of their group, but they face a tough test against Edinburgh on Friday. A slip-up could see French side Toulon take their place.
While Bath lack recent success in Europe, Russell brings valuable experience from his time with Racing 92, where he reached the final in 2020 and the semi-finals in 2022.
"The Champions Cup is the Holy Grail for me," he admitted. "I'd love to win Europe. We were so close with Racing, and it would mean the world to me to finally achieve it."
Russell believes Bath are still finding their feet after the departure of attack coach Lee Blackett at the start of the season. His replacement, Martin Gleeson, has implemented a forward-based strategy, but Russell hints at a shift towards a wider, more expansive style in recent weeks.
"Since the November Tests, we've focused on playing with more width, like we did in previous years. Lee and Gleeson have different approaches, and we're figuring out what works best for us. In the last few games, we've seen more success by spreading the play."
As Bath prepare for their clash with Edinburgh, Russell expects a physical battle, especially against his fellow Scot, Cameron Redpath. "It's always a fun rivalry," he said. "I've already warned my Scotland teammate Duhan [van der Merwe] to be ready for some aerial battles!"
Can Bath rise to the challenge and make their mark on the European stage? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: Finn Russell's dream of Champions Cup glory is far from over.
