The IPL's Most Expensive Overseas Player: A Bidding Battle Unveiled!
In a thrilling turn of events, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has shattered records, becoming the most expensive overseas player in IPL history. But here's where it gets controversial...
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious in a heated bidding war with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), securing Green for a whopping INR 25.20 crore ($2.8 million). This deal not only makes Green the third most expensive player sold at an IPL auction but also the highest-paid overseas player ever.
And this is the part most people miss... KKR's winning bid was just the beginning of their auction dominance. They also acquired the second most expensive player, Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, for INR 18 crore. With a massive purse of INR 64.3 crore, KKR left their competitors in the dust.
The bidding process itself was a spectacle. It began with Mumbai Indians (MI), who quickly dropped out due to their limited purse of INR 2.75 crore. Rajasthan Royals, with a purse of INR 16.05 crore, put up a good fight, but it was CSK and KKR who took center stage. Green's bid lasted over ten minutes, and he now ranks among the elite, just behind Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer.
But here's a twist: Green's earnings will be capped at INR 18 crore due to the IPL's maximum salary cap for overseas players. The excess amount, INR 7.2 crore, will go towards player welfare initiatives, a unique feature of the IPL's mini-auctions.
Green's IPL journey began in 2023 when MI signed him for INR 17.5 crore. He impressed with 452 runs and six wickets. MI then traded him to RCB, where he continued his stellar performance, scoring 255 runs and taking 10 wickets. However, Green sat out the mega auction in 2025 due to a back injury.
In a surprising turn, Green was one of only two batters sold on Tuesday, alongside South African batter David Miller, who joined Delhi Capitals at his base price. Other notable players like Jake-Fraser McGurk, Prithvi Shaw, and Devon Conway went unsold.
The bidding continued with the all-rounders, and only two out of seven found new teams. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) snapped up Wanindu Hasaranga, while Venkatesh Iyer, previously with KKR, moved to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Liam Livingstone and others remained unsold.
The wicketkeepers' auction saw more action, with MI, DC, and KKR securing Quinton de Kock, Ben Duckett, and Finn Allen, respectively, all at their base prices. CSK, with the second-largest purse, remained quiet during the first three sets.
So, who took home the players? Here's a breakdown:
- KKR: Cameron Green, Finn Allen, Matheesha Pathirana
- LSG: Wanindu Hasaranga, Anrich Nortje
- DC: David Miller, Ben Duckett
- RCB: Venkatesh Iyer, Jacob Duffy
- MI: Quinton de Kock
- CSK: None (yet!)
- GT:
- PBKS:
